Facts Check Verdict: misinformation

News Verification: The nation was in all cheers to welcome the sudden news of the availability of around 3000 tonnes of Gold found in India, however, it turned out now that due to an error by a District Mining officer, the whole claim turns out to be misinformation.

Earlier on Friday 21st, 2020,  UP government's Department of Geology and Mining confirmed that an estimated 3,000 tonne of gold reserves have been found in Uttar Pradesh's Sonbhadra district. By Saturday the Geological Survey of India said that it has not discovered the estimated information as given out in the news.

Geological Survey of India, clarified the news on 22 Feb and issued a press release, As per GSI study, the probable conservative figure of gold which can be unearthed is estimated to be around 160 kgs and not 3350 tonnes as mentioned in media reports.

There are three goldfields in the country, namely Kolar Gold Field, Kolar district, Hutti Gold Field in Raichur district (both in Karnataka) and Ramgiri Gold Field in Anantpur district (Andhra Pradesh). Karnataka is the largest producer of gold in India.

As claimed by a social media user on Social Media that many south Indians have more Gold in their homes than the one found at UP.

So as per current estimates, the current estimate by GSI is 160 Kg and not  3350 tonnes.
