Did the West Bengal government intentionally keep the onion prices by blocking the trucks loaded with onion

Fake news claim: A message viral claiming, “Onion stocks are rotting because of a conspiracy between Mamata Banerjee government in WestBengal and the Congress party. No one’s hearing the transporters. This is to somehow defame the Modi government so that the supply of onions is stopped and inflation keeps rising.

Facts Check Verdict: False

News Verification: Recently the onion prices skyrocketed and touched the sky. The onion that was generally sold at around Rs 25 to 30, went up to the selling price of Rs 200. A video widely shared and viewed on social media claims this to be a conspiracy of the Mamta Banerjee and the Congress party.

The message claims to be from the Ghojadanga border of West Bengal. The same video is available from the month of Oct, so it is not new. As can be heard in the video the truck drivers are standing since 25 September. The driver goes ahead to say, “It is a request to all truck drivers to not load onions in Ghojadanga border, West Bengal. We are standing here since September 25 and it’s October 5 now but no party is hearing us and no transporter is taking our calls. All the onions are rotting. Water is leaking. From where will the truck owners give instalment if the trucks are not emptied? There is no hearing by any party here in the Ghojadanga border. At least 200 trucks are parked here. The truck owners have not received any details. We are standing here for the last five days. Do not load onions here, it’s a request

India banned onions on Sept 29, as reported by Reuters, due to a seasonal shortage which has been worsened by flooding in several states. In several cities prices of the vegetable have doubled in recent weeks, prompting the government of the world’s biggest onion exporter to take steps to calm prices ahead of key state elections later this year.

Times of India reported news on Oct 5, 2019, stating “Onion trucks halted at border finally allowed to enter Bangladesh”

A total of 225 trucks from Nashik carrying 6,750 tonne of onions, which were stranded at the border due to a ban on exports of the kitchen staple by the Centre, were finally allowed to enter Bangladesh. “The trucks had left Nashik days before the Union government banned onion exports on September 29 due to a steep rise in the prices,” said Dindori MP Bharti Pawar.

News from banglatribune, The news published on Oct 9 states that “Importers are dissatisfied with the quality of onion, onion truck from India”

Hence the news has nothing to do with the West Bengal or any political party.
