Kolkata: Maulana Noor-ur Rehman Barkati sacked as Tipu Sultan mosque's Imam on Wednesday yet he refused to go with the orders as he has the support of the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.
He was sacked earliar on Wednesday for his “objectionable and inflammatory remarks against the country”.
Earlier on May 11 the head of Shahi Imam on the Centre’s ban of red beacon had said “ I am a religious leader and have been using the red beacon over the decades, I don’t follow the orders by the centre. Who are they to order me?”. He further said in West Bengal only the orders of the state government are effective.
On just another day he further said that he would not remove the red beacon even if the Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to do so.
Barkati’s comments were criticized by many of the state Muslim leaders.
Siddiqullah Chowdhury, WB Library Minister and a cleric, had Also demonstrated against Barkati on May 13 near the mosque.
Many police complaints were also put against the Imam in different police stations of West Bengal against the former Shahi Imam head who had recently threatened a jihad against the country over the issue of lal batti.
A police complaint was lodged against the Maulana Noor-ur Rehman Barkati in Bowbazar police station to forcefully take away the keys of the mosque's official room, said the head of the board Anwar Ali Shah.
"No one has the power to remove my red beacon. It's been with us for decades. It is the RSS which is illegal, Narendra Modi is illegal not the red light on my car.," Barkati was quoted as saying by India Today.
