India: The Election Commission asks political parties to stop using photos of armed forces personnel in their campaign material. This follows a complaint by Ministry of Defence to EC. Soldiers need to be kept a mile away from politics. It is really good decision by the EC. Now need to ensure implementation.

The EC said in the notification that “The Min. of Defence has brought to the notice of the commission that the photographs of the defense personal are being used by the political parties, their leaders and candidates in advertisements as part of their election propaganda and requested the Commission to issue suitable instruction in this regard.

The commission, accordingly calls upon all the political parties to advise their candidate/leaders to desist from displaying photographs of defense personal or photographs of function involving defense personal in advertisement or otherwise as part of their election propaganda/campaigning.”

Sheyphali Sharan, Official Spokesperson, Election Commission of India, tweeted “General advisory issued again 2 political parties 2 advise their candidates/leaders to desist 4m displaying photos of defence personnel or photos of functions invlg defence personnl in advts or otherwise as part of their election propaganda/campaigning”.
