Tamil Nadu, Ban PETA Support: With growing number in the state to protest and ban organization like PETA can also have a negative impact on the animals in the state. However many of the people including DMK and several actors are standing to fight PETA directly on order to ban it.

Dear Respected Officials,

I have recently learned that via a 7 January 2016 notification in The Gazette of India, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is again trying to permit events like jallikattu and bull races.

PETA India has documented that during jallikattu, terrified bulls are often deliberately disoriented by being given substances like alcohol; having their tails twisted and bitten; being stabbed and jabbed by sickles, spears, knives or sticks; and being punched, jumped on and dragged to the ground. During races, bulls are often hit with nail-studded sticks. In bullfights, a round ends when one of the bulls manages to flee or is killed.

And as calculated from various media reports, there were approximately 1,100 human injuries and 17 deaths, including that of a child, from 2010 to 2014 as a result of jallikattu-type events.

Lifting the protection against cruelty to bulls would be a black mark on our nation, which has always been looked up to by people around the world for our cultural reverence for animals. Towns in Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, France and Portugal have declared themselves to be against bullfighting, and Catalonia, a region in Spain, has banned it. India will now be considered archaic because sensibilities around the world are changing in favour of animal protection.

I beseech you to protect bulls by withdrawing the Gazette notification permitting events like Jallikattu and bull races.

Thousands of protestors mostly students,  above 5,000 numbers, gathered at Marina beach demanding for the removal of ban on Jallikattu. Mostly seeking a ban on the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which has been made responsible for the people for having anti-Jallikattu stand.

The call for a ban on PETA also coming aloud within the ruling AIADMK, with general secretary Sasikala Natarajan leading the chorus for it. She said Centre should move fast and build consensus  to pass an ordinance for revoking the ban on Jallikattu. She further said we will adopt all legal measures to ban PETA,".

Earlier DMK said animal rights advocacy group PETA as “anti-national” added further to it also said it is working against TamilNadu culture and seeking a ban on the NGO which has been stridently opposing the bull-taming festival Jallikattu. The Centre should immediately ban the international PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) , NGO - which is against our culture and is anti-national,” DMK President Leader MK Stalin said.
